Planning a Deck

Decks can add a lot of visual appeal, quality of life and value to your home. If you are considering adding a deck to your home; however, there are several key points you should keep in mind in order to maximize the best use of your new deck.

First, think about all the ways in which you plan to use your deck. For example, is this going to be just a place for the family to hang out or do you envision your new deck serving as an outdoor entertaining area? If so, do you plan to do any cooking on your new deck? Many homeowners also like to add relaxation centers to their decks in the form of spas and Jacuzzi tubs. What is your local climate like? When are you likely to most use your deck? Thinking about these matters ahead of time will allow you to get the most of your design. Finally, do not forget to consider access points, both from the house and the yard as well.

When considering ways in which you can design your deck, be sure to consider both the most traditional designs as well as designs that are somewhat more modern and unique. In the most traditional designs the deck is attached to the rear of the home; however, many homeowners are now designing their decks to wrap around or even begin on the side of the home.

Make sure you give sufficient thought to the size of your deck. You don’t want it to be too small but at the same time you want to make sure it doesn’t engulf the rest of your home and landscaping. A multilevel deck can provide separate activity areas, a more visually appealing design and sufficient space for all of your needs without taking up too much area at once.

Deck plans should also take into consideration factors such as seating, electrical access and cooking. It’s a good idea to plan on at least a few electrical outlets on the deck for a variety of purposes. If you plan to cook, you will probably also want to include piped-in natural gas or perhaps propane.

You will naturally want to choose a pressure treated lumber for most of your deck; however, there are numerous options available for decorative features such as the railings. Consider options such as cedar, cypress and redwood. Several different resin and fiberglass options are also now available ensuring hands are free from splinters. In addition, these new modern materials are practically maintenance free.
