Keeping your Roof in Good Shape

Roofing maintenance and repair are often a nightmare for many homeowners due to the fact that it typically involves a lot of time, labor and expense. In far too many cases, homeowners find themselves experiencing more trouble with their roof than they should because they ignored the warning signs until it was too late. To help save you a lot of time, trouble and expense read the following tips.

First, it is important to understand that while we generally think roofs should last twenty fifteen or twenty years, it is imperative that you check on the condition of your roof each and every year. A number of small things can happen to your roof throughout the year and when they go un-addressed for several years at a time the durability of your roof is seriously hindered. So, take the time each year, preferably in the spring, to give your roof a good once over to repair any small issues before they become major problems.

First, check to make sure you don’t have any trees growing too close to your roof. This can be a major source of problems because it allows limbs and branches to come into contact with the roof, possibly resulting in scratches and gouges. In addition, the leaves from trees that are too close in proximity to your roof will typically clog your gutter and that can cause even more problems. If a tree is growing too close, trim it back.

Eyeball your roof to determine whether it appears there are any streaks on the roofing material. If so, this can be an indication there is a problems with mold or something similar. When addressed immediately, this can be readily fixed; however, if you let it go over time your roofing material will be destroyed.

Finally, do not forget to inspect the roofing material to make sure you are not missing any tiles that may have been blown or torn off. If so, these should be replaced immediately. Letting even one or two shingles go can lead to a weakened roof system and that can spell trouble over time. Remember, that in most circumstances you do not need to hire a contractor to repair one or two roof tiles unless you just want to do so. This is a very easy to repair do it yourself project. Loosen the first row of undamaged shingles that lie above the missing or damaged row. Gently pry away neighboring shingles and replace with a new shingle. Tack everything back down and you should be good to go for another year.
