Installing Fencing
Many people dream of having a home with a white picket fence; however, the reality is that traditional white picket fences require a lot of upkeep and maintenance. A great solution is to install a vinyl fence to add visual appeal and value to your home and property. Unlike traditional wood fencing, vinyl fencing options give you the advantage of being practically maintenance free. In addition, you will find numerous style and color options.
If you are considering the installation of a vinyl fence on your property, there are several factors that deserve ample consideration first. It is important to take into consideration the size of the area you will be fencing as well as the level of privacy you want the fencing to provide. In addition, don’t forget to consider whether the style of fencing you have selected with blend well with the existing architectural design of your home.
Installing a vinyl fence can actually be relatively easy, as long as you prepare ahead of time. Remember to always check your local codes to find out if there are any regulations regarding the installation of fences. Many communities provide guidelines regarding the amount of space you must set the fence back from your property line. If there are no regulations regarding this matter, it is usually a good idea to place the fence in about 2” from your property line. Finally, don’t forget to make a call to your local utility service just to make sure you won’t be interfering with any gas, telephone or other kinds of utility line when you begin to dig.
Before you begin, take the time to stake each corner of the perimeter of the area that is to be fenced. Simple wooden stakes can be used for this purpose. You can then tie string along a straight line between each stake. Now, it’s time to start marking the areas where post holes will be dug. Usually, you should place posts about every eight feet.
If you’ve never tried to dig holes the manual way, you can rest assured this is not the time to learn. If at all possible, it is best to go down to your local hardware store and rent a power auger. The small amount of money you spend will easily save a lot of pain in your back and arms. Remember to dig each hole to a depth of about 30”. Once the holes are dug it is time to begin setting the posts.
Mix the concrete one bag at a time and fill the hole up to about 2” below the top. Once the hole is filled, tamp it down some to get rid of any possible air bubbles or pockets. Now, square each post into their respective holes following the same procedure for each one. Give everything time to rest, at least 24 hours, before trying to install the rails.
Before installing the rails make sure all the posts are plumb and level. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the installation of rails, pickets, post caps and gates according to the specific design you have purchased.
